TECHNOL. Tour de lavage, colonne creuse où se fait l'épuration du gaz. Les matières volatiles recueillies au haut de la cornue passent dans un condenseur aérien, puis dans des scrubbers à eau retenant l'ammoniaque, et dans des scrubbers à huile retenant les fractions légères (CHARTROU, Pétroles natur. et artif., 1931, p. 180).
Prononc. et Orth.:[], []. Plur. des scrubbers. Étymol. et Hist. 1877 (Ch. LA BOULAYE, Dict. des arts et manufactures et de l'agriculture, II, 34b, s.v. éclairage au gaz ds HÖFLER Anglic.). Empr. à l'angl. scrubber, dér. de to scrub « récurer, frotter, nettoyer, laver » dont les corresp. m. b. all. et m. néerl. laissent supposer une orig. germ. mais dont l'étymon vieil-angl. n'est pas établi. Scrubber est att. dep. 1853 comme terme désignant un dispositif d'épuration du gaz de houille (NED). Bbg. BONN. 1920, p. 125.
